HMG is a global leader in the design, manufacturing and refurbishment of all components used in heavy industries. From stripping, surface finishing and packaging, they have been supplying heavy engineering requirements across a wide range of industries including Mining, Agriculture, Oil & Gas and Defence to name a few.
Their previous website was built over 10 years ago and whilst impressive for the time, there was a need to upgrade both the brand and website to reflect the new stature of HMG and how it is perceived from the industries it serves.
Our vision for the site was to create a fairly clean and self-explanatory website. Ensuring the imagery reflected the business added onto the clean display of information around services and industries. It was also important to have their people highlighted – from board level and leadership through to long service employees and the general team behind the operation.
We created a scrolling home page which fundamentally identified all the relevant information for HMG clientele: services available, video overview of the business, industries and how to make contact. By doing this, we created a window for the user to either progress deeper into the site or making direct contact without searching for enquiries buttons.
Ease of access was a big focus for the client and they were especially interested in making the navigation quick and easy to use. The solution we came up with was to create a fly-out menu that resembles the functionality of a horizontal drop-down menu.
Removing the need for users to click the navigation items gives immediate feedback on hover in a user-friendly and intuitive layout.
This functionality is progressively enhanced for mobile to ensure that where hovering is not available, the navigation is useable and consistent. This approach to displaying content worked so well for the navigation that it was fashioned for use within content pages as well.
When looking at the industry pages, they were required to have a clean and easily referenced section around types of equipment and the parts that HMG can service. In both the Industry and Services pages, having a slide show on each of pages added in a nice functionality. For Industry, it was to showcase the type of equipment HMG use and for Services it the human aspect of the business and a strong reinforcement for the business itself.
